Today is the annual Laba Festival again. It is also the most important festival of the twelfth lunar month. On the eighth day of December, it was called "La Ri" in ancient times and commonly known as "Laba Festival". Starting from the pre-Qin Dynasty, the Laba Festival has been used to worship ancestors and gods, and pray for a good harvest and auspiciousness. It is said that the day of enlightenment of the founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni, is also on the eighth day of December, so Laba is also a Buddhist festival called "Buddha Enlightenment Festival".
There is a custom of eating Laba porridge on this day. Laba porridge is also called "Qibao Wuwei porridge". The history of drinking Laba porridge in our country has been over a thousand years. It first started in the Song Dynasty. Every Laba day, whether it is the imperial court, the government, the monastery or the homes of the Li people, they will cook Laba porridge. In the Qing Dynasty, the custom of drinking Laba porridge became even more popular. In the palace, the emperor, empress, prince, etc. all give Laba porridge to ministers of civil and military affairs and servants, and distribute rice and fruit to monks for consumption. In the private sector, every household also makes Laba porridge to sacrifice to their ancestors; at the same time, the family reunite to eat together as a gift to relatives and friends.
After the Laba porridge is cooked, you must first worship the gods and ancestors. After that, you must give it away to relatives and friends, and you must send it out before noon. Finally, the whole family eats it. The leftover Laba porridge, which is left after being eaten for a few days, is a good sign, whichever means "surplus every year". If you give the porridge to the poor, it will be more for yourself.
Every year on the Laba Festival, our local temple will cook several large pots of Laba porridge for charity to the local people. On the day before the Laba Festival, in addition to the monks in the temple, many Buddhist disciples with hair and spiritual practice and local citizens who believe in Buddhism joined the ranks of making Laba porridge. The next day, before dawn, the people from all directions came to the mountain with pots and pans and formed a long line, waiting for the porridge. Everyone hoped to get the mountain porridge. On the one hand, it takes the meaning of eliminating disasters and diseases, and promoting longevity, on the other hand, it takes the meaning of good weather and good harvest.
In the past, every year during the Laba Festival, I would also receive porridge from friends who lined up to receive it. Since Laba Festival this year happened to be Saturday, I happened to have time again today. So, when I got up early in the morning, I prepared the ingredients and cooked a pot of Laba porridge by myself.
When it comes to the ingredients of Laba Congee, there are different recipes everywhere. It is usually made by putting together eight kinds of ingredients or more, adding water and simmering over a low heat. In some places, some ingredients with local characteristics are added for making.
